ScotlandBooking Deals Blog: Highland Summer Bargain Hunting

Published on 09 July 2013

Well, we're now into the full swing of summer. The school holidays have already started in Scotland, whilst English schools will break up in a week or two. Accommodation is at a premium and demand and prices are high....aren't they?

The short answer to that is yes, most definitely. But in reality it's not so straighforward. Holiday plans can suddenly change for a variety of reasons, and last minute cancellations of either individual or block bookings can leave hotels all of a sudden desperately trying to fill accommodation they assumed was fully booked up for the summer. Therefore if you look carefully, even in peak season it's possible to seek out a few late summer bargains.

Just to prove the point, we thought we'd take a look at the Highlands, one of the priciest areas of Scotland for accommodation during the summer months, and as it turns out even here there's a few absolute steals on the go.

In the Highland capital of Inverness for instance, the 3-star Royal Highland Hotel is currently as low as £39 per night - a price that would be a struggle to match even in the depths of winter.

Holiday Inn also appear to be bucking the seasonal trend in the Highlands, with the Express by Holiday Inn, again in Inverness offering rooms starting from £41.

The Cairn Hotel, situated in the lovely village of Carrbridge just off the A9 between Aviemore and Inverness, looks like a great option from just £30 per night. This hotel has some glowing guest reviews, particularly with regard to the standard of service and cleanliness of the rooms.

Further south down the A9, the 3-star Highlander Hotel in picturesque Newtonmore has rooms available, with prices currently starting from just £35 per night.

Finally the 3-star Aviemore Inn currently has offers going from just £41 per night. Aviemore is often worth a look at this time of year as in some respects this is its off-season, the town being a major winter sports resort.

As always we'd advise the way to get the best of these deals is to be as flexible with your dates as possible. Hotels will likely only have brief windows at this time of year when rooms are available, and a sudden price drop will be accompanied by a rapid price hike once the accommodation fills up again.

ScotlandBooking Deals Blog: New Ardrossan - Campbeltown Ferry Route, Latest Accommodation Offers

Published on 20 May 2013

Caledonian MacBrayne Ferries have recently announced the commencement of a new, thrice-weekly summer route between Ardrossan and Campbeltown on the Kintyre peninsula. The service will also stop once a week at Brodick on the Isle of Arran and is scheduled to begin on 23 May. Although only a pilot scheme for the moment, the service opens up much easier access to Kintyre as a tourist destination for those travelling from the south and beyond.

This is the time of year when we generally see a big leap in accommodation prices as demand increases substantially. As always though at ScotlandBooking we keep a lookout for the best deals. Here are some we've uncovered recently.

Via LateRooms, the Oban Bay Hotel & Spa is offering prices as low as £140 per night from 24 May. This represents a discount of over £300 off their regular tarriff and includes breakfast.

We've also spotted the 4-star Thistle Aberdeen Altens Hotel for as low as £60 per night for a standard twin room via Booking.com, again from 24 May. This hotel includes luxury facilities such as a spa, indoor pool and gym.

The 3-star Glen Mhor Hotel & Apartments in Inverness is currently available for as little as £30 per night. This is a centrally located hotel that's been praised by guests for its excellent bar and ample parking facilities.

Finally, the Clovenfords Hotel in the Border town of Galashiels has deals available starting from just £40 pounds per night. The Clovenfords is a 4-star hotel highly rated by guests, particularly for its service standards and the quality of its dining.

ScotlandBooking Deals Blog: May Breaks in Glasgow and Edinburgh

Published on 01 May 2013

As we head now into late spring and gradually into the summer season it becomes noticeable that there's also a gradual upwards creep in accommodation prices. In fact this isn't the case right across the board, but seeking out those deals does become a bit more involving. One thing that's generally true is that it's easy to find cheaper accommodation in the major cities during the summer season, rather than in smaller towns and rural areas, who are often booked up well in advance. With that in mind we thought we'd share some of the deals on offer in Glasgow and Edinburgh this month.

Starting with Glasgow, the 3-star Newton Hotel currently has prices as low as £30 per night. This is a centrally located hotel, within easy reach of both the city's major railway stations; Queen Street and Glasgow Central.

Similarly the 3-star Argyll Hotel is located slightly further west on Sauchiehall Street and adjacent to Kelvingrove Park, and currently has deals as low as £27 per night.

And once again staying in the city centre, the 4-star Acorn Hotel is as low as £44 per night during May. This modern hotel is within easy walking distance of a number of the city's sites such as The King's Theatre and St Mary's Cathedral.

Hopping over to Edinburgh now, and first off is the 3-star Ailsa Craig Hotel, which is located in the New Town and looks a good bet with prices from as low as £28 per night. It's located adjacent to both the Royal Terrace and Regent Gardens, and is in easy walking distance of some famous locations, including Calton Hill and the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

Also 3-star, and located out by Portobello towards the city's shoreline, the Best Western Kings Manor Hotel offers facilites including a swimming pool and a well-equipped gym. A stay there during May is as low as £34 per night.

Finally we've spotted that the 4-star Hilton Edinburgh Grosvenor looks a bit of a bargain, with prices currently starting from £38 per night. Located in the city's Haymarket area, it boasts its own on site restaurant and facilities including a business centre, currency exchange and dry cleaning services.

ScotlandBooking Deals Blog: Exploring Perthshire

Published on 17 April 2013

The county of Perthshire is one of Scotland's most picturesque, and such is its consequent draw as a tourist destination there is a huge concentration of hotels and accommodation within the area. Situated towards the eastern side of the country its climate is generally more favourable than the wetter west coast, so even at this time of year it's a good bet for a holiday or short break. We thought we'd take a look at some of the current deals available across the region.

Located in the Fair City of Perth itself, the 3-star Salutation Hotel is currently as low as £39 per night. It's centrally located within the city, making it ideal for shopping.

There are also a number of quality guest houses and B&Bs within the city with some competitive prices on offer. For example, the 4-star Clunie Guest House has some excellent guest reviews and is currently as low as £36 per night, and the nearby 4-star Dunallan Guest House is as low as £38.

If you fancy something more rural the 3-star Macdonald Loch Rannoch Hotel & Resort in the lovely village of Kinloch Rannoch currently has offers from just £37 per night. Here you can enjoy facilities like a sauna, gym and swimming pool in an absolutely idyllic location.

Via LateRooms the Atholl Arms Hotel in Blair Atholl is currently down from £71 to as low as £45 per night, with further discounts if you stay an extra night.

Finally if you fancy pushing the boat out a bit, how about a stay at the world famous Gleneagles Hotel? Whilst a lot of the time this top of the line 5-star hotel is out of the price range of us mere mortals (frequently exceeding £400 per night as a starting price), at the moment they have prices starting from a somewhat less scary £130 per night. Pretty much the last word in luxury in Scottish hotels, the Gleneagles will also be staging the 2014 Ryder Cup on its golf courses. It even has its own railway station!

ScotlandBooking Deals Blog: Norwood Hall Aberdeen, Highland breaks and more

Published on 28 March 2013

Well, it seems despite Easter being upon us, Spring has been put on hold as the country continues to experience unseasonably low temperatures. Not that it should deter you from a well earned break and, chilly as it may be, it's dry and the skies are clear. Sometimes that's a bit of a novelty in Scotland! We thought we'd share some of the accommodation deals we've spotted for the Easter holidays.

Via Laterooms the luxury 4-star Norwood Hall Hotel just outside Aberdeen is offering some huge discounts, for example £132.00 for a couple per night. This would normally be closer to £1000 per night!

Meanwhile the 5-star Kew House in Edinburgh is currently as low as £55 per person per night. This guest house has been very highly rated those who've stayed there and is within easy reach of the city centre, but don't delay in booking if you fancy staying - the rooms are in big demand.

As I mentioned, the weather at the moment is cold but clear and sunny, and looks like lasting for another week at least. So if you don't mind the temperatures this may be an ideal time for a break in rural Scotland before the summer season begins in earnest. Why not base yourself in the city of Inverness to explore all the Scottish Highlands have to offer? The city's Glen Mhor Hotel is currently as low as £30 per night. This 3-star hotel is centrally located and has had many positive guest reviews.

Alternatively you could enjoy some late season winter sports in the Highland resort town of Aviemore. The 3-star Aviemore Inn is currently offering deals from 35 per night, and there's an even better deal on offer a bit further up the road in the picturesque village of Carrbridge, with the 3-star Cairn Hotel (link) offering rooms from £30 per night.
