Budget Highland hotels

If you're on a budget (and few of us aren't at the moment) but still fancy a break in the Scottish Highlands there's frequently some good deals to be had. Often it's difficult for Highland hotels to lower their prices to the levels of the Holiday Inns and Travelodges of this world, as some obviously have remote locations which push up their running costs. Nevertheless we've listed a few of our favourites here which fall into the 20 - 50 GBP per night range. They're not the last word in luxury, but are perfectly comfortable and in great locations, and let's face it, when you're spending time in the Highlands the last thing you want to do is spend all day in you're hotel room!

If the following don't suit though be sure to check out our comprehensive multi-site price comparison tool, for great deals in the Highlands and across Scotland.

Drumnadrochit Hotel

The village of Drumnadrochit is situated on the shores of Loch Ness, so perhaps unsurprisingly this hotel is very popular with Nessie hunters - it also contains the famous Loch Ness Exhibition Centre. All rooms are en suite, with a TV, phone and central heating. Inverness airport is just a 40 minute drive away.

Bank Street Lodge, Fort William

Fort William is an excellent summer destination, and possibly an even better winter one if you enjoy your winter sports - the Nevis Range ski facility at Aonach Mor is just a couple of miles away. The Bank Street Lodge is a good value hotel just couple of minutes from the town centre. Rooms are en suite with TV with a range suited to singles, couples and families.

Glen Mhor Hotel, Inverness

Inverness has an enormous amount of accommodation to choose from, however its increasing desirability as a destination is pushing up prices. The Glen Mhor however shouldn't put too much of a hole in your wallet. It has a good location near the centre of town and is just 10 miles from the airport. Rooms are well appointed; en suite with bath tub, satellite TV, climate controls and internet access.

Glenfield Hotel, Ullapool

Ullapool is a great location in it's own right, but also the ideal stop over if you're planning to head on to the Western Isles since the ferry to Stornoway arrives and departs from here. Glenfield Hotel has it's own gardens, while rooms are en suite with satellite TV.

Balmacara Hotel

Balmacara is just a few minutes from Kyle of Lochalsh, from where you can cross the bridge over the sea to the Isle of Skye, making it an ideal base to explore some of the West Highland's most scenic areas. Rooms are en suite, with satellite TV, and tea/coffee making facilities.

Royal Hotel, Thurso

The far north of Scotland, perhaps because of the distances involved in travelling, is sadly often overlooked as a destination. This is a shame as the scenery is as spectacular as anyhere you'll find elsewhere in the Highlands. The Royal Hotel, located in the heart of the small town of Thurso, is an excellent base for exploring the area. The rooms are air conditioned, en suite, with satellite TV and coffee/tea maker.
